BUYING & SPECIFYING

What affects door closer price in India?

Door closers span a wide price range, and most of the difference is explainable. Here is what actually sits behind the number on a quote.

Sterling DC 2000 door closer

Door closer quotes vary more than buyers expect for what looks like the same object. Most of the spread is explainable, and knowing what drives it makes two quotes comparable instead of confusing.

Power size and model

The biggest single factor. A closer for a 45 kg internal door and one for a 100 kg entrance are different products: bigger spring, larger body, more material, higher loads through every component. Across a manufacturer's own range the price climbs with the EN power size for exactly that reason.

This is why sizing properly matters commercially as well as technically. Specifying a heavier closer than the door needs pays for capacity that never gets used, and specifying a lighter one to save money produces a door that does not latch.

Surface-mounted or concealed

Concealed closers generally cost more than surface equivalents, and the installed difference is wider than the unit difference. The body has to be morticed into the leaf or transom, which is accurate workshop preparation rather than a drill and a template, so the labour is higher and it is far cheaper to do at manufacture than as a retrofit.

Worth pricing the installed cost rather than the unit cost when comparing the two.

Certification

A certified product carries costs an uncertified one does not. Third-party product certification means testing to a published standard, a licence to maintain, and ongoing factory surveillance. Sterling's door closers are ISI marked to IS 3564:1995 under BIS licence CM/L No. 7700126309, and the floor springs under CM/L No. 7700249814.

That is a real difference between two units that look alike on a shelf, and on government, institutional and larger commercial work it is frequently not optional. If a quote is materially cheaper than others, the certification status is the first thing worth checking.

Cycle rating and build

Durability is the other invisible difference. The benchmark is 500,000 cycles, which is what Sterling's closers and floor springs are tested to, and reaching it reliably depends on the housing material and machining, the seal quality and the rack and pinion mechanism inside.

On a low-traffic internal door this barely matters. On an entrance cycling a few hundred times a day it decides whether you buy once or three times, which is usually the larger number.

Features

Hold open, back check and two-speed control are not universal, and each adds mechanism. Both Sterling floor springs include hold open at 90 degrees and back check; among the overhead range the concealed DC 2800 holds from 10 to 90 degrees. Paying for a feature the door does not need is as wasteful as discovering too late that it was needed.

Finish

A standard PU-painted finish and a stainless steel or specialist coated finish are different processes with different costs. On floor springs the visible element is the top plate, which is why finish appears on the specification at all.

Quantity

Project quantities price differently from single units, which is worth raising explicitly when a building has fifty doors rather than one. Schedule the doors first, group them by power size, then ask for a quote against that schedule.

What the quote often leaves out

Three things regularly sit outside the headline number and change the comparison: installation labour, any door preparation needed (a mortice for a concealed unit, a floor recess for a floor spring, reinforcement for a hollow-core leaf), and accessories such as pivot sets for a floor spring on a wooden door.

The useful comparison is installed cost across the expected life of the door, not unit cost. A cheaper closer replaced twice in the period a certified one runs uninterrupted is not the cheaper option.

Asking for a price

Sterling does not publish list prices, because the figure depends on the model, the quantity and the finish. The fastest route to a realistic number is a door schedule with leaf widths, masses, mounting type and quantities, which is enough to size and quote against. Send an enquiry with those details and you will get something comparable rather than indicative.
