How the size
is read.

EN 1154 sorts door closers into sizes EN 1 to EN 7 by the largest door each size controls. The door weight and the door width are read against the table separately.

Each figure gives a size: the door weight against each size’s weight limit, the door width against its width limit. The larger of the two sizes governs. A door of 50 kg and 1000 mm is EN 3 by weight and EN 4 by width, so it needs EN 4.

A model is listed as rated when the door is within both of its limits: the door weight at or below its rated weight, and the door width at or below its rated width. A closer’s EN range is the span its closing force can be set across.

Sterling floor springs carry no stated EN 1154 size. They are matched on their rated door weight and width: the FS 1000 for 60 to 80 kg and the FS 3000 for 90 to 120 kg, both for doors up to 1100 mm wide.

Questions about
door sizing.

How is the EN 1154 size of a door closer worked out?

From the door weight and the door width. Each figure gives a size on the EN 1154 table, and the larger of the two governs. A door of 75 kg and 1050 mm is EN 4 by weight and EN 4 by width, so it needs EN 4.

Can the door width decide the size on its own?

Yes, when the width falls in a higher size than the weight. A door of 50 kg and 1000 mm is EN 3 by weight and EN 4 by width, so it needs EN 4. A wider leaf needs more closing force to bring it shut, so the larger size governs.

Are floor springs sized with EN 1154?

Sterling floor springs carry no stated EN 1154 size. They are matched on their rated door weight and width: the FS 1000 for 60 to 80 kg and the FS 3000 for 90 to 120 kg, both for doors up to 1100 mm wide. A door over 80 and under 90 kg sits outside both rated ranges.
